Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2014

A proud "dad" to furkids Harry & Penny (both Airedale Terriers), Governor Tom Corbett believes that every animal has the right to safe and humane treatment. Since taking office, Governor Corbett and his team have made strides to ensuring that this right is a reality:

Restructuring the Dog Law Enforcement Office: In this restructuring, Governor Corbett and his team have elevated the importance of the Office, reinforcing its functions to enforce the law.

Ensuring kennel compliance: The team is fulfilling the law's requirement on kennel inspections, and fining and bringing into compliance kennels that are in violation of the law.

Helping owners find their missing pets: Working with shelters willing to collect and house stray dogs, and providing more public information for owners about where stray dogs are housed if they go missing.

Signed into law a ban on the use of gas chambers to euthanize dogs and cats.

Committed to funding veterinary training: Governor Corbett has committed to funding the University of Pennsylvania's School of Veterinary Medicine, a world-class training and veterinary research center, and Pennsylvania's only veterinary institution.
